The ceremony was conducted by His Royal Highness, King Charles III, and was his first official engagement since his coronation.

The Whittle Laboratory is named after Sir Frank Whittle who invented and pioneered the development of the modern jet engine. He founded the Laboratory at the University of Cambridge in 1973 to tackle some of the key technical challenges in aviation to accelerate the advent of the jet age.
